Am I at risk?
On this page you will find some of the most unpleasant statistics about everyday life within Australia. Whilst these facts are not designed to alarm you, they are valid when considering personal protection insurance like Life, Income Protection or Critical Illness coverage. You want to make sure your money is well spent.
What are the risks to you and your family whilst living in Australia?
There are currently 20,226,267 people living in Australia as at November 30th 2004. The following statistics are derived from this population:
The odds
- 1 in 12 Australians will die before aged 65
- 1 in 9 Australian women aged 30+ will suffer a critical illness before 65
- 1 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life
- 1 in 12 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime
- 1 in 11 men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime
- 1 in 4 men suffers from depression at some time in their life
- 1 in 6 women suffers from depression at some time in their life
It can happen to you
Over 90% of deaths in Australia are from the Big 3 diseases - cancer, stroke and cardiovascular disease:
Every day around 80 Australians die prematurely from coronary heart disease alone
Each hour around 40 new cancer cases are diagnosed in Australia
You will not always be fit and healthy
Even though Australians life expectancy has increased, not all is well. Males have a life expectancy of 77 years but only 57 of those years are likely to be free of some significant disability. For females, it is 82 and 63 years respectively.
We are not immune
Stroke accounts for a quarter of all long term disabilities in Australia. 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women are expected to be directly affected by cancer before they are 75 years old. There is a high chance we will be off work at some time. A recent study found that around half of all Australians over the age of 30 will suffer a major illness that can lead to long-term disability, and consequently, a long-term loss of income.
Businesses rely on people
In a business with three male partners, all aged 45, there is a 50% chance that one will die before retirement at age 65.
